Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Florida Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-132, 8.5)

The San Francisco Giants have been the most consistent home team this season.

The Giants are 27-13 at home, just a win behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (28-13) for the best home record in baseball. But while the Dodgers won their first 13 home games and have played slightly above .500 since, the Giants have been much more steady at AT&T Park.

The Giants have completed six homestands and have winning records in all but one, going 3-4 vs. the Washington Nationals and New York Mets in mid-May. They have won the opener and the finale of every homestand.

San Francisco has played 15 home series and is 12-2 with four sweeps. It has won the series opener 12 times and the series finale 10 times.

Wednesday’s meeting with the Marlins is the series finale. The Giants have four home games with the San Diego Padres before the All-Star break.

The Kansas City Royals have been awful on the road this season – except when Zack Greinke is on the mound.

Greinke’s road mark includes a complete-game 1-0 loss at Anaheim and a no-decision at Cleveland in which the bullpen took the setback. He has pitched at least six innings in all but one of his road starts

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

A.J. Burnett (New York Yankees)

The right-hander has been overpowering in his last four starts, going 3-1 with an ERA just under 1.00 since a bad outing at Boston nearly a month ago. After that performance, he vowed things would be different – and they have been.

“It’s a lot better,” Burnett told the team’s website after his last start. “I'm just looking forward to getting out there again, because the more you get out there, the more comfortable you get."

Over that span, Burnett has 33 strikeouts in 27 1-3 innings while giving up just 16 hits. He will be looking to win three straight starts for the first time this season.

Ryan Sadowski (San Francisco Giants)

It doesn’t matter that Giants veteran lefthanders Barry Zito and Randy Johnson haven’t pitched to expectations. Young guns Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain have San Francisco in postseason contention, and they may be joined by another rookie hotshot.

Sadowski is a 27-year-old right-hander who was drafted in 2002 and has made a slow progression through the minor leagues. Never considered a top prospect, he definitely is pitching like one.

In his first two major league starts, Sadowski has not given up a run in 13 innings, winning twice while allowing just seven hits and four walks. He has received 20 runs of support.

A native of Davie, Fla., which is just outside Miami, Sadowski’s third start is against the Marlins, his hometown team.


Returning

Aaron Laffey (Cleveland Indians)

The left-hander is back on the mound for the first time since May 22 at Cincinnati, sidelined with a right oblique strain. He will also be making his first start since May 2 at Detroit.

Laffey made 25 starts without a relief appearance over his first two years and began this season in the rotation. He made four starts before being moved to the bullpen for the first time in his career.

As a starter, Laffey is 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA this season, surrendering 21 hits and 15 walks.

Oliver Perez (New York Mets)

It’s nice that Perez is returning, because the left-hander is so erratic he can be streaking and slumping in the same game.

Perez was riding his customary roller coaster through his first five starts before suddenly developing tendinitis in his right knee that sidelined him for two months.

“I’m excited to be ready to pitch again,” Perez told the media Saturday upon rejoining the team.

Mets fans may not be as excited. Perez failed to get through five innings in four of his five starts.


Slumping

Ervin Santana (Los Angeles Angels)

The right-hander spent the first six weeks on the disabled list, then another three weeks before returning over the weekend, preventing Santana from developing any consistency.

His troubles date back to last season and have been worse at home. In his last six starts at Angels Stadium, Santana has failed to pitch six innings.

During that span, he is 0-3 with an astronomical 11.52 ERA, giving up 52 hits and 11 walks. Worse, the Angels are 1-5 in those games despite scoring 30 runs.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bet

Chicago Sky at Phoenix Mercury (-10, 179)

If the Chicago Sky are going to play any better on the road, they will have to do it without star center Sylvia Fowles.

The Sky's leading rebounder and best player, Fowles, will not play this week due to soreness in her right knee. She missed 17 games during her rookie 2008 season, and Chicago was just 12-22 overall.

Fowles is averaging 12.7 points and 9.0 rebounds. With her in the lineup, the Sky are just 1-4 on the road, with the lone win and cover in overtime at Atlanta.

Chicago also has lost its last six meetings with Phoenix, the top-scoring team in the WNBA.

This series has sweep written all over it.

The Dodgers took care of business in Game 1 shutting out the Mets 8-0. Tonight Hiroki Kuroda goes to the mound as LA looks to take advantage again of a beat up New York squad.

The Mets have lost four straight and nine of 11 and have gone scoreless in 22 consecutive innings. Over that span they’ve gotten just 10 hits all singles and they’ve been outscored 21-3. The New York offense has for the most part been MIA since Carlos Beltran went out. They’ve gone 5-10 with a .229 average and scored one run or fewer seven times, including four shutouts. With no Beltran or Jose Reyes in the line-up David Wright is the only real threat remaining and he’s struggling big-time. Wright is 0-16 after drawing the collar Tuesday night against the Dodgers.

Tonight the Mets pin their hopes on lefty Oliver Perez who was just called up from Triple A. Perez has been a disaster going 1-2 with a 9.97 ERA. He’s given up 24 runs in 21 innings and has walked 21.

The Dodgers, who lead the majors with a 53-30 record, will counter with the steady Hiroki Kuroda who is 3-4 with a 3.98 ERA. Kuroda has won two of his last three starts striking out 16 while walking two.

Hopefully the umpires will let Manny play a little bit longer tonight. But even if he makes another early exit the Dodgers still have too much for a Mets team that can’t wait for the All-Star break to get here

As the All-Star Game approaches, bettors will try to squeeze in as many plays as possible over the next couple of days around Major League Baseball. With 12 teams playing during the day, nine games highlight the Wednesday night card, including several important division battles.

Blue Jays at Rays - 7:10 PM EST

Those other two teams in the AL East race besides the Red Sox and Yankees continue their series at Tropicana Field. Following a great start to its road trip, Tampa Bay dropped the final four games at Toronto and Texas. The Rays did shut down the Jays in the first two contests at Toronto, winning each game, 4-1. The Jays avoided the sweep by shutting out the Rays in the series finale, 5-0.

Both teams are still in the thick of the division race, but the Jays will play AL East opponents in nine of their next 12 series. That includes battling the Rays ten more times before the end of August.

Scott Kazmir hasn't been very sharp since coming off the disabled list at the end of June. The Rays lefty lasted just five innings in each of his last two starts, a win over the Marlins, and a loss to the Rangers. Coincidentally, those were the first two 'unders' Kazmir has hit this season, following nine consecutive 'overs.' The 'under' has been a solid play when Kazmir faces Toronto, nailing it in seven of his last eight starts.

Brian Tallet has been inconsistent all season long, delivering quality starts in four of his last eight outings. Tallet is coming off a loss at the Yankees his last time out, allowing six hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Tallet hasn't faced the Rays in his career, as Toronto is 2-10 the last 12 meetings at Tropicana Field following Tuesday's 3-1 victory by Tampa Bay.

LVSC has installed the Rays as $1.60 favorites, with the total set at 9.


Dodgers at Mets - 7:10 PM EST

Oliver Perez returns to the mound after a two-month stint on the DL, as he faces the team with the best record in baseball. Perez, who signed a three-year extension in the offseason, hasn't provided the bang for the buck, posting a 9.97 ERA in five starts. The Mets lefty survived the fifth inning in only one of his five outings, while allowing at least four earned runs in four starts.

Hiroki Kuroda has made six starts since being activated from the DL at the start of June, but the Dodgers right-hander has struggled to find consistency. The Dodgers are 3-4 in Kuroda's seven starts over the last five weeks, with two of his worst starts coming against the Padres and A's. Both San Diego and Oakland rank at the bottom of baseball in team batting average. In Kuroda's last trip to the Big Apple (granted, it was Shea Stadium), the righty was lit up to the tune of seven hits and six earned runs allowed in 2.2 innings pitched last June.

The Dodgers are 17-9 against left-handed starters this season, while going 9-5 on the road. The Mets, meanwhile own a dreadful 1-10 mark in their last eleven Game 2's of a series, dating back to the end of May.

The Dodgers are $1.30 road 'chalk' according to LVSC, while the total is listed at 9.


Cardinals at Brewers - 8:05 PM EST

This series has been dominated by the road team since last August, with the away club winning 11 of the past 13 meetings. Milwaukee has taken 14 of the past 20 matchups, but St. Louis has been victorious in the last three meetings, including Tuesday's 5-0 shutout.

Former Cardinal Jeff Suppan has been unimpressive at Miller Park this season, going 1-5 with an ERA of 6.08. In seven of Suppan's ten home starts, the 'over' has hit, while the final combined total in those contests is 10.3 runs/game.

Amazingly, Todd Wellemeyer has won seven games this season, despite an ERA of 5.44. Wellemeyer has given up 118 hits in 96 innings of work, but is 3-1 coming off a quality start, after shutting down the Giants his last time out.

Milwaukee has opened up as $1.15 favorite, with the total at 9.5, according to LVSC.


Yankees at Twins - 8:10 PM EST

Following an up-and-down start to the season, A.J. Burnett is getting his stuff together, as the Yanks have won three of his last four starts. Burnett has allowed nine earned runs in his last seven starts, while giving up one run or less in four of those outings.

The Bronx Bombers have won 10 of their past 12 entering Tuesday's action, while playing a crucial stretch against two teams that will compete for a playoff spot, the Twins and Angels. Minnesota, meanwhile, is in a similar spot, 1 ½ games behind Detroit in the AL Central after capturing two of three from the Tigers over the weekend.

Glen Perkins has bounced back nicely after a rough home loss to the Astros. The Twins southpaw has given up two earned runs in his last two starts, road victories over the Cardinals and Royals. Perkins' last outing against the Yankees was an ugly one, allowing seven hits and six earned runs in just under one inning of work (Perkins landed on the DL after that start with an injured elbow).

The Yankees are 16-9 this season against left-handed starters, including a 7-2 mark on the road.

LVSC has installed New York as a $1.35 road favorite, with the total at 9.


Rangers at Angels - 10:05 PM EST

The two top teams in the AL West continue to battle, as the home team has won six of seven meetings entering Tuesday's action. The Angels are 10-3 their last 13 games, including a 6-1 home ledger. The Rangers, despite Monday's 9-5 loss, have won five of their past six.

Ervin Santana has struggled following a 16-victory campaign in 2008. The Angels righty, who has spent substantial time on the DL this season, is 1-4 with an ERA of 7.43. Santana has delivered only one quality start in seven outings, while tossing at least 100 pitches in just one trip to the hill this season. The Angels have beaten the Rangers in three of Santana's last four home starts dating back to 2006.

Vicente Padilla is set to return to the mound after receiving an extra day of rest due to a sore right shoulder. Padilla's last start was a loss to the Angels, allowing ten hits and five earned runs in five innings of work. Padilla's road numbers are significantly stronger than at home. The Rangers righty is 3-1 away from Arlington, with an ERA of 3.43, while four of his six road starts have finished 'under' the total.

The Angels are a $1.35 home 'chalk,' with a sizeable total of 10, according to LVSC.

Gold Cup soccer: Day 5 analysis and predictions

When it comes to numbers, Shawn Young knows what he's talking about. He's a former oddsmaker of European soccer (among other sports) and has his masters in mathematics.

Group B is back in action at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night. The forecast calls for clear skies and temperatures in the mid 70s. Saturday’s results saw Honduras nip Haiti 1-0 and the USA stroll past Grenada 4-0. In the second set of games, Haiti and Grenada will first do battle and the USA will take on Honduras in the nightcap.

HAITI (-1, -125) vs. GRENADA

Haiti fought much harder against Honduras than we expected and arguably deserved a draw. Grenada showed absolutely nothing against the USA and was fortunate to lose by only four.

Haiti is the play here. Most of that goes back to Saturday’s form, but gamblers also have the tournament schedule and format in their corner. The top two teams from each group, as well as the two better third-placed teams make the quarterfinals. Haiti has already lost to Honduras and isn’t expecting to get much out of the final group game against the USA Saturday. Haiti isn’t going to roll over against the USA, but this game against Grenada is the one they desperately need to win. The first tie-breaker for the third place teams is points, the second is goal difference. Haiti, then, will need to press for as many goals as they can get in this one.

The soccer bettor’s nightmare when betting on the heavy favorite is that when his team gets up 1-0 or 2-0 they’ll try and sit on the lead rather than continue to play aggressively. No fear of that here.

prediction: Haiti 2, Grenada 0

USA (-1, even) vs. HONDURAS

The USA beat Honduras 2-1 in Chicago June 6 but that result is of no relevance. Nobody from that American team played Saturday against Grenada, and at most one player (Davies) looks like seeing any action against Honduras this time. The Americans have sent a second-string team to this tournament and American soccer isn’t that deep.

This is one of those games where the bet is underdog-or-nothing. The USA did outshoot Grenada 18-2 and Honduras did struggle to break Haiti down. The Americans do have home-field advantage. When it comes down to talent, however, these squads are now evenly matched. That means that a line of -1 is too much.

Honduras is the play here. They are perfectly capable of trading attacks and getting a draw, or nicking a victory with a little bit of luck. Worst case scenario for Honduras is they lose by the odd goal, giving us a refund on the bet.

Picking sides: Baseball's top lefty / righty splits

Left-handed pitchers are getting worn out this season.

Using on-base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS), major league hitters have been much rougher on southpaws.

The average OPS against lefties is .760, considerably higher than the .742 mark against right-handers. And for some teams, the difference is much more dramatic.

There are some teams that rough up right-handers better than left-handers, although not as many. And nine teams don't appear to have a favorite with a difference of less than .010, although only two of them are in the top half of the majors in offense.

Leaning Left

1. Houston Astros (.817 OPS vs. LHP, .701 OPS vs. RHP, +.116 OPS vs. LHP)

The only power the Astros have from the left side is switch-hitter Lance Berkman, while the lineup is loaded with right-handers Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada, Hunter Pence and Ivan Rodriguez.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (.829 OPS vs. LHP, .725 OPS vs. RHP, +.104 OPS vs. LHP)

This is a bit of a surprise given the 50-game suspension of right-handed slugger Manny Ramirez, but Matt Kemp and Casey Blake have provided some pop. Now that Ramirez is back, the difference should grow.

3. New York Mets (.815 OPS vs. LHP, .717 OPS vs. RHP, +.098 OPS vs. LHP)

With injured Carlos Delgado out of the lineup and switch-hitters Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes also sidelined, the run-producing burden has fallen to right-handed swingers David Wright and Gary Sheffield, accounting for the huge difference.

Radical Right

1. St. Louis Cardinals (.676 OPS vs. LHP, .760 OPS vs. RHP, +.098 OPS vs. RHP)

It makes sense to pitch right-handers against Albert Pujols, who is hitting just .300 BA versus righties. The Cardinals, however, are 29th in OPS vs. lefties. The rest of the lineup has lefty-swinging Colby Rasmus, Chris Duncan and Rick Ankiel, who have roughed up righties.

2. Baltimore Orioles (.699 OPS vs. LHP, .774 OPS vs. RHP, +.075 OPS vs. RHP)

The left-handed power bats of Luke Scott, Aubrey Huff and Nick Markakis and switch-hitter Brian Roberts make the Orioles far more dangerous when facing right-handers. Baltimore is just 27th in OPS vs. lefties.

3. Oakland Athletics (.632 OPS vs. LHP, .701 OPS vs. RHP, +.069 OPS vs. RHP)

The A's are dead last in OPS when facing left-handers. They are considerably better but still weak against right-handers, with lefty bats Jack Cust and Jason Giambi their only hitters with double-digit homers.
